I moved to San Diego in 2010, partly on a whim, and partly because palm trees are a beacon to my soul. I’ve spent the last 7 years wandering the city and its beaches, finding my home nestled above the waves and amongst the hummingbirds, and bunking up with a few furry critters to keep me company (the four legged type.) As most folk my age discover, life will pick you up and sweep you away if you’re not careful. I stumbled onto a job that I am lucky enough to love—a job that keeps my mind busy, my heart full and my schedule packed. But after years of academics and studying, my creative side gave me an ultimatum—It’s time to get off the high-speed career highway, or else.
I grew up with music all around me—pianos, cellos, French horns, bands and orchestras—that was my “extracurricular” life up until I went off to college to study. Most of my friends have pursued their love of music in one way or another—symphony musicians, music teachers, composers. I am in awe of their talent and their dedication. I am also in awe of their determination to see their dreams materialize, the same dreams we mulled over 20+ years ago in a Texas band hall.
I never seriously dreamed about being a musician. Unless you count my fleeting dreams of being a female version of Calvin Harris in front of thousands of dancing souls. (Sorry Taylor, I still love you more.) But I do dream of listening to the creative voice inside my head, and seeing where it takes me. I love colors and sounds, tangents and musings. I love imaginations, and where they take you when the rules of life are removed. I love sitting and listening and letting my mind run free, to the corners of life that don’t fit so nicely into our day jobs.
And that’s where The San Diego Album got its inspiration. One year, one venue a week, one new adventure. Surrounded by music and hopefully a few friends that are crazy enough to come along. Immerse myself in creativity, and let the rest happen from there. I’m so excited to see where this year takes me, but also so excited to just sit back and enjoy the ride.
